TIMELINE OF EVENTS SPRING IN 2,701 (Mar, Apr, May) MARCH - Élise accepts a quest from Lancelot to scout areas of Glaschu looking for signs of Unseelie activity and destroying any campsites found or reporting them for destruction if she can't do so on her own. (This is a solo quest, but I'm open to interactions that might occur while she's out on this mission.) APRIL - Description MAY - Approximately halfway through the month, Élise will find the harp in her dreams and smash it. Prior to this, it's likely she'll express thoughts and emotions she normally holds back from anyone. May - It's a swan murder party as Élise kills as many as she can in order to convert them to cash. A young woman has to make sure she has resources, after all. Also swans are assholes. SUMMER IN 2,701 (Jun, Jul, Aug) June - At the Treun summer tourney, Élise will compete in the melee event. July - She will take some interest in the murders but otherwise seek to develop her magical skills. August - Visit the Sunsoak Market; otherwise tbd. FALL IN 2,701 (Sept, Oct, Nov) September - A visit to the Treun wreath festival; highjinks with the Drabbish language spell. October - Samhain; tbd November - Élise will hunt down some of the escaped inmates. May - Swan Murderfest

[When Élise hears that the pestilent breed of encroaching swans turns to actual gold upon death, she knows immediately that animal cruelty is in her future. (Not too cruel, of course—she'll make it quick.) She's gotten by in the last few months, but a chance to stock up on her cash reserves is never unwelcome.

As she is not a hunter, the only weapon she can use against one of the birds is her swords. She feels a bit foolish creeping through the farmland, but the swan is busily eating some of the sprouting crops, and a quick strong slice quickly proves that the story about the gold is true.

Of course, when she looks up from collecting the figurines, another swan is there. A big swan. And it looks angry.

Élise runs, and resolves to take on the next swan with company.]

[A year ago, had anyone suggested she might do what she's about to, Élise would have would have thought them mad or a fool. But circumstances had changed in her life, and changed further when her life brought her somewhere far away.

So here she is, ready to learn magic. It's a little amusing that she doesn't feel feel foolish about the prospect.]

It is my pleasure, Élise. [As is his habit, he already has tea set up, and a wide assortment of biscuits, muffins, and other baked good and pastries, as well as candied fruits and sweets. He likes to have yummy things on hand when discussing with people.] Besides that, I think we all ought to help one another. I would have been in a grave situation if those I first met hadn't looked after me.

Then, as with the rocks, we will have to work to draw the magic into you, or at the least through you. Have you thought on what kind of magic you would favour?

It's charitable of you to think that I may even be capable of more than one kind.

[But that's not going to help him help her find her way, so...she think about it for a few moments before replying hesitantly.]

I've heard stories of mastering the elements. Controlling fire and ice and such. Only stories in my world, of course. But they come to mind.

Elemental magic is the most common here—you will find many more learned in it than I. [He draws out his book, flipping it open to the section on elemental magic. All of his notes are set aside with careful references, lists and lists of books with further information.]

It seems to be more common to work with one element at a time, and of course it can take a great deal of time. But there is plenty of writing on how versatile it can be for what comes in the moment.

[Battle magic, in other words. Runes were an academic's work, but elemental magic could be brought to bear in war, when one was directly under attack.]

[The notes mean very little to Élise at a glance, but that's fine; she'll just have to change that state of knowledge. It's what she's here for, after all.]

Perhaps we should start with where you started, and go from there. I certainly don't want to waste your time by asking for something outside of your area of expertise.

I started with runes because, ah—[He flushes a little.] I like them. They're a little like poetry and a little like mathematics. And if you cannot find one to say what you want it to, you can always restructure the others so that you may write out your spell.

I decided to focus myself on learning spells for transference. If it is only about seeing one thing move to another place, then you will always know the magic's cost.

I'm not mathematician and even less a poet, but that sounds sensible enough to me—to start with the familiar.

[Perhaps she'll find something familiar to help her learn. Perhaps not. Regardless, she will try her damndest.]

What did you first transfer?

Ah, just a little energy into stone. It was easier to start it as a one-way route. I've managed to make things more complicated, with practice.

[He looks up at her, curious.] What familiar things might you like to work with? I use song to help the magic—I play piano. Do you have any instruments, or dance or anything the like?

Oh, you don't want to hand me an instrument. It would be even worse if I sang. I won't subject your ears to that when you're doing my a favor.

[She's smiling, but she means it. Perhaps Élise is being too hard on herself, but...it's probably best not to test her musical skill, or lack thereof.]

I've danced before, though not regularly. If anything, I suppose use of a sword is my greatest talent. It's certainly been my dearest possession here.

[That's cute, and he does laugh a little. But taking into consideration what she said, Dorian reaches for the book and flips through it.]

You could use runes, or enchanted stones, to add magical effects to your swordsmanship. There are spells that can be written in the air with a sword, or particular movements that can draw out magical effects that might compliment your swordsmanship.
